What is Podiatry?
Podiatry specialises in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of conditions of the foot, ankle and lower limbs.
Feet are very complex, they are made up of 52 bones (26 in each foot) and a network of muscles, joints and ligaments, therefore often demand professional expertise. Podiatrists specialise in such areas as:
- Orthotics
- Biomechanical assessment (walking/gait assessment), including flat feet, high arches, pigeon toeing
- Sports injuries of the lower limb
- Mobilisation and manipulation of joints in feet
- Trigger point therapy
- General foot care, including corns and callous, warts, athletes foot
- Diabetic foot care
- Paediatric (child) foot problems
- Footwear assessment and recommendation
- Nail infections, including fungal and ingrowing
- Nail surgery
