What is Psychology?
Psychologists work by talking with people about their experiences, how they are affected, and what they do to try and solve problems. Their approach may reflect a particular theoretical point of view, e.g. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT). They may use psychological tests, or teach specific strategies or skills e.g. conflict management, relaxation training. They may suggest that some activities be undertaken outside of sessions (‘homework’.) With permission, they may also consult with or refer you to other professionals and services, including your doctor. The number of sessions depends on the range and type of issues. Sometimes only a couple are needed, but some people may need longer term contact.
Psychologists are trained in understanding human behaviour. To be called a psychologist a person must be registered with the government, requiring a high standard of university qualifications and experience. Psychologists must also follow a professional code of conduct ensuring that clients are treated professionally.
